Conor is son-thing special

- By Tom Hopkinson

CONOR BENN is confident victory over Samuel Vargas on Saturday will spring him a step closer to his dream of emulating dad Nigel by becoming a world champion.

But, unlike the Dark Destroyer, who reigned at middleweight and super-middleweight, the welterweight has no plans to hang around once he gets to the top.

Benn said: “I’m not here for a long time, I’m here for a good time.

“I just have to achieve the world title once, however long it takes, and I will be a very happy man.”

Benn, 24, became a dad 10 weeks ago, although 31-year-old Vargas shouldn’t think he’ll be facing a man who has been deprived of sleep for more than two months.

“I’ve managed to stay well away from that,” Benn added, “I’ve been sleeping like a trooper.

“My missus has been great with baby Eli and it has been such a blessing.

“I’ve got a good set of earplugs that I wear and a set of blinds and I’m off.”

The year is promising to be a big one for

Benn, who, along with promoter Eddie Hearn, hopes the Vargas fight will set up a clash with Amir Khan or Kell Brook.

Hearn said: “It’s very important for Conor and Matchroom next week because, when you look at the future of British boxing, and British stars, Conor is the new breed, he’s the next pay-per-view star. You only do that by reaching a certain level, or by great performances.

“I really want him to fight for the European title in the summer, I really like the fight with Amir Khan or Kell Brook later in the year, a huge pay-per-view fight that would be as well.”
