ATLETI FOCUS EYE ON WINKS

- By Tom Hopkinson

HARRY WINKS has emerged as a target for Atletico Madrid this summer with Tottenham finally willing to listen to offers for the midfielder.

Everton and Valencia were both keen to sign him ahead of this season.

And Valencia tried again to take him on loan in January, but Spurs blocked his exit both times.

Now, though, there is a willingness to let him go if the right offer comes in when the window opens, with the player having struggled for game time under Jose Mourinho this season.

Winks will cost around £15-£20million with Spanish sides Atletico, Valencia and Sevilla all hoping to take him, and Everton still interested.

Atletico need to sell before they have the funds to move for Winks but, if they can do the business they need to do, then Diego Simeone’s La Liga leaders will be a massive option for him.

Winks’s maternal grandparents are Spanish and, before he committed to England, the Spanish FA kept tabs on his progress with a view to offering him a pathway into their national team.

The 25-year-old made his way through the academy at Tottenham and into the first team with Mauricio Pochettino.

But his future at the club was cast into doubt by Pierre-emile Hojbjerg’s arrival from Southampton last summer.

Spurs refused to sanction his departure in the six months that followed but, with Oliver Skipp’s impressive form on loan at Norwich this season, there is a belief within the club that they have a ready-made, longterm replacement and Winks is no longer seen as part of Mourinho’s plans.
