Pep’s talk is all about solidarity

- By Simon Mullock

PEP GUARDIOLA paid tribute to his Manchester City players after they moved to within touching distance of reclaiming the Premier League title.

Runaway leaders City need 11 points after beating top-four chasing Leicester thanks to second-half goals by Benjamin Mendy and Gabriel Jesus.

After going 17 points clear of Manchester United at the top,

Guardiola’s side now face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League quarter-finals.

They are through to the Carabao Cup final and also face an FA Cup semi-final after kick-starting a hectic period with another win.

City boss Guardiola said: “This was a great victory and a massive step towards winning the Premier League.

“We are close now. I think three more wins and two draws and we are there.

“When you have a team with 26 victories from 27 games then you have to trust them.

“That’s why I used players who maybe don’t play too often, but I want to play them all because I trust them.

“I think that I trust my players more than they trust me.

“They all know they have to play well if they want to play in the next game.

“So there is big competition in the squad – but there is also solidarity.”

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers confirmed that defender Caglar Soyuncu missed the game after testing positive for coronavirus while on international duty with Turkey.

Rodgers said: “Caglar tested positive along with some of his team-mates and is still in an isolation bubble in Turkey.”
