‘Sancho and Marcus will get respect’

- By David Lynch

JADON SANCHO and Marcus Rashford should expect to receive a “more respectful” reception from other fans after they were abused by Leeds supporters on the opening day, says

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

And the Manchester United boss says he will follow the example set by Sir Alex Ferguson after international disappointment for David Beckham in order to protect the England pair.

Last weekend, travelling fans at Old Trafford subjected Sancho and

Rashford to taunts suggesting they “let the country down” in missing shootout penalties in this summer’s Euros final.

But Solksjaer said: “I don’t expect that to happen with too many away fans, or other fans.

“Most of them are more respectful and support their country more. With regards to how we handle it, no problem, Jadon and Marcus are both strong characters, it won’t be an issue.

“You see other clubs’ fans, they show their support to the players who’ve been brave enough to step up for their country.”

In explaining how he will support the pair, Solskjaer used the example of Fergie backing Beckham after he was vilified for his role in England’s exit from the 1998 World Cup.

“We, as a club, know that sometimes you have to be strong and the way he dealt with the Becks situation was the right prototype,” he added.

“We will protect him, I’ll protect him – and that’s absolutely no issue.

“With Becks, he dealt with it in his own way, ‘I’ll show you, I will show character, I’ll prove how good I am’. That’s the trait

of a Man United player.”
