Jude and Co left Frei ’n dry

SC Freiburg 2 Borussia Dortmund
WJUDE BELLINGHAM produced an eye-catching display but could not stop Borussia Dortmund from crashing to a Bundesliga defeat at Freiburg.
The 18-year-old England midfielder played a part in Dortmund’s goal and hit the post but still ended up on the losing side.
Fine strikes early in each half from Vincenzo Grifo and Roland Sallai gave the home side control but Dortmund had hope when Bellingham’s cross went in off Yannik Keitel for an own goal.
But that was as good as it got for a Dortmund side that had equalled the club record of eight successive league wins with victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the season’s opening match.
But they were out of sorts here and could have no complaints after being second best throughout.
Grifo’s stunning free-kick put Freiburg ahead in the sixth minute.
That sparked the visitors into action and Bellingham came closest to an equaliser in the first-half, hitting the post with a header from a corner.
Despite Dortmund bossing possession for long spells, they found themselves two down just eight minutes into the second-half.
Sallai was left unmarked in
the penalty area and he fired home from close range.
Dortmund were thrown a lifeline when midfielder Keitel steered Bellingham’s low cross past his own goalkeeper in the 59th minute.
But the Freiburg rearguard stood firm to repel the visitors, with Erling Haaland having a rare off day.
Dortmund’s best chance to
equalise fell to the usually clinical Haaland, but the Norwegian striker spooned over when clean through, summing up their afternoon.
This defeat caps a disappointing week for Dortmund, who also lost in the German Super Cup to rivals Bayern Munich.
And the honeymoon period is over for new boss Marco Rose, who has issues to sort.
