The valiant SAS shame our leaders

THIS morning Afghanistan is waking up to the harsh reality of Taliban rule.

All gains made in the country during the last two decades will suddenly vanish.

It will become, once again, a dangerous and deadly place.

People have been trying to escape ever since the announcement the US and Nato were withdrawing.

But one group of people has gone the other way. There are 40 SAS who have pledged to stay on and take the fight to IS-K.

They want to avenge their fallen colleagues - the Marines blown up by a suicide bomber earlier this week. Their courage is almost unreal.

Incomparable

Afghanistan now is one of the deadliest places on the planet.

We wish them luck with their mission – and they should know how proud we are of them.

To help with the evacuation and then stay on to carry on the fight is incredibly brave.

It’s hard to compare people to the SAS. They are incomparable.

But their courage and skill only serves to shine a light on our politicians’ lack of both.

From a Foreign Secretary who couldn’t get off his sunbed to a Prime Minister who has bumbled his way through this crisis, they should look at the example shown by the brave troops staying behind and vow to do better.

The place to start is Operation Warm Welcome, bringing the people fleeing that ravaged country to our shores and making sure they are safe.

Boris Johnson said: “I am determined we welcome them with open arms and put in place the support they need to rebuild their lives.” A great sentiment. Now it’s time to deliver.
