DEEP TROUBLE
Detectives must investigate a suspicious death aboard a submarine in Suranne Jones’ star-studded new thriller
Finding a fresh way of telling a murder mystery can be tough in a TV world chockful of edge-of-yourseat thrillers – but that’s exactly what BBC One drama Vigil manages to do. Set in the Scottish seas and with a mega-talented ensemble cast any channel would envy, the action kicks off with an unexpected death onboard Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil.
DCI Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) is called in to lead the investigation at sea and she recruits DS Kirsten Longacre (Game Of Thrones’ Rose Leslie) to be her eyes and ears on land. But they soon realise there’s more to the apparent accidental overdose than they’ve been led to believe by the crew – and soon suspect foul play.
As the two women piece together the case, their only means of communication is by telegram – but the transmissions are being closely monitored. However, they do manage to exchange hidden messages that help give them vital leads.
Amy and Kirsten prove a formidable duo, not least because, as former lovers, they know each other and work together so well. But as their love story plays out and viewers discover more about them, Amy finds herself analysing her past while desperately trying to focus on the job at hand.
Will she and Kirsten get to the bottom of the case or are they in too deep? And if Suranne and Rose didn’t provide enough star power, the cast also includes Endeavour’s Shaun Evans, Line Of Duty actor Martin Compston and Peep Show’s Paterson Joseph.
That line-up, coupled with the highstakes drama we’ve come to love and expect from the genre, means this sixparter is practically drowning in talent.
