GARETH AINSWORTH heaped praise on his Wycombe side as they made it a club-record seven straight home league wins.

The Chairboys are hunting an immediate return to the Championship and stormed up to second in League One thanks to a lightning start.

Garath Mccleary and Brandon Hanlan (above, left) scored inside the opening seven minutes to KO Gillingham who later saw Vadaine Oliver miss a penalty.

It is now five out of five at Adams Park this season to go alongside victories in their last two second-tier games prior to relegation.

And delighted boss Ainsworth said: “It’s an amazing achievement and I am really proud of that record.

“We use this place as a fortress. You look at the top, top teams and hear these records of not being beaten at home for two years – like Liverpool, Man City and Man United – and that’s key to success in a team.

“I asked for an intense start and it is my job to keep inspiring them to get out there and have a fast start like that.

“This performance was another growth, it was a real professional performance the way we saw it out.”

After scoring four in the second-half against Morecambe last week, Wycombe continued where they had left off.

Just one minute and 31 seconds were on the clock when Sam Vokes headed on and ex-reading star Mccleary finished expertly left-footed past Jamie Cumming.

On seven minutes it appeared game over as Curtis Thompson’s drive deflected into the path of former Gills man Hanlan who could not miss.

Frustrated Gillingham fans chanted for chairman Paul Scally to leave but they were granted a lifeline as Josh Scowen’s clumsy tackle on Kyle Dempsey resulted in a penalty.

Scowen was down injured for five minutes but Oliver blazed over the spot kick after the long delay.

Gillingham struggled for any way back into this contest and Wycombe could have won by more.

Cummings saved to keep out Vokes’ header while the impressive Hanlan then was denied by the post after the Gills keeper had gone missing.

Visiting manager Steve Evans admitted: “We are not at the same level as Wycombe.

“You can’t come to boys who have played a lot of Championship football last season and give away two poor goals in the first seven minutes.

“The statistics this season tell you how well Wycombe have started games.”
