Cook wants good habits

- By ROBERT DUNFORD at Portman Road

PAUL COOK demanded more despite his new-look Ipswich side continuing their climb up the table.

Goals by Conor Chaplin and Macauley Bonne eventually sent the home fans away happy.

The Tractor Boys were among the favourites for promotion at the start of the season following a signing spree.

But after a slow start, they are now finding their feet even though the Ipswich boss believes his 14th-placed side must be more consistent.

He said: “Great credit to the players, we’ve won and dug out a result. Our fans leave the stadium elated, I can’t thank the supporters enough.

“The stadium is rocking, but as a manager I want to enjoy watching our team play. Today I’m back to not enjoying it.

“It’s 100 percent a mentality, you can’t be good then decide to not be as good.

“Football is about habits – the best teams are about habits. At the minute we’ve got a nice group of lads.

But our mentality to be a good team isn’t quite there yet – it’s something we’re going to work on.”

Ipswich were in total control from the beginning, with Wes Burns and Matt Penney having halfchances.

It was no surprise when they took the lead on 23 minutes. A header from Bonne was saved by goalkeeper Marko Marosi, but Chaplin was on hand to fire in the rebound.

However, the visitors stunned their opponents on 28 minutes. A solo run by Shaun Whalley was finished off with a fine strike from outside the area.

Shrewsbury could – and perhaps should – have doubled their lead on the half hour mark. Ryan Bowman put a low Daniel Udoh cross over the bar from less than seven yards.

Worryingly, Bowman then had to leave the pitch with palpitations and was taken to Ipswich hospital by medical staff.

Ipswich grabbed their second goal nine minutes after the restart as Bonne flicked on a Lee Evans corner for his ninth.

The striker was just inches away from his second on 70 minutes, when he just failed to connect to a Penney cross.

It proved to be enough for Ipswich and it was a result that left Shrews chief Steve Cotterill “gutted”.
