Doc’s night of tragedy as No10 partied

- By Graeme Culliford

EXCLUSIVE

A FURIOUS doctor last night called for Boris Johnson’s resignation after watching a pregnant woman die of Covid the same night No10 threw a Christmas party.

Dr Elissa Abi-raad said she is still racked with grief over losing the mum-to-be in her early 30s during a caesarean section on December 18 last year.

While her colleagues were performing CPR at a hospital in Kent, top Tories were quaffing champagne in Downing Street.

At the time, indoor mixing other than in household bubbles was banned in London under Tier 3 Covid restrictions.

Mr Johnson’s party is believed to have taken place at the same time as the unnamed woman was pronounced dead from Covid at 8.30pm.

Dr Abi-raad, 27, said: “I am really angry and disappointed because Boris is supposed to lead by example, but he was doing the exact opposite.

“That Friday, December 18, was the most traumatic day I have ever worked. We had performed an emergency C-section because the 32-week-old baby was pressing on his mother’s lungs and her oxygen levels were dropping.

“As we were stitching the wound back up her heart stopped.

“The team started doing chest compressions but we couldn’t bring her back and I had to go outside and tell her partner she was dead.

“She was a healthy young woman with a normal BMI and no pre-existing conditions. She was just pregnant and had Covid-19.”

Dr Abi-raad was working in the gynaecology department at the hospital in the Kent area, which she does not wish to name.

By December, roughly 400 beds out of 460 were occupied with Covid patients and huge numbers of staff were off sick with the virus.

Dr Abi-raad, now a GP, added: “For Boris to flout his own rules shows how selfish and egotistical he is.

“If any doctor is seen behaving the way he did – breaking lockdown rules – they would be reported to the General Medical Council and possibly have their licence revoked. But he is doing this with no consequences.”

This week the Prime Minister denied that Covid rules were broken at his Christmas party.
