BASHAM’S DREAMING OF PREM

- By Neil Goulding

CHRIS BASHAM is desperate for Sheffield United to return to the promised land.

The Blades were relegated from the Premier League last term and are eight points adrift of the Championship play-offs at the midway stage of the season after suffering a slow start.

But today they look to upset Wolves at Molineux in the Cup, a victory which the veteran defender believes would help put the south Yorkshire club back on the map.

“We’ve only just gone down, so we’re hungry to perform against Premier League opposition,” said Basham, now in his eighth season with the Blades.

“Putting the stamp down in the last few games has been great. I’ve seen a hunger in the side. There’s a determination to keep clean sheets and win matches.

“Can we perform on the big stage come Sunday? Well, I hope so! It’s going to be a tough game, but there’s a hunger about us and from the manager for us to do well.

“Hopefully we can get in the hat for the next round. The lads want to play Premier League sides and against the best in the world.

“Wolves have just beaten Manchester United, so they’ll be thinking they’ve got a chance of silverware this season.”

Basham, 33, revealed he has spoken to new boss Paul Heckingbottom about a new Bramall Lane contract. And he is confident the club have the ability to get back to the top flight.

“I’m buzzing about the place and the way things are going,” he added.

“There’s only one aim – and that’s to get back to the Premier League.

“I’m enjoying playing more regularly. Hopefully things will happen in the next few weeks with my deal – the club have always backed me.”
