Thousands on the march over cost of living

-

PROTESTERS vented their anger over the cost-of-living crisis at marches in dozens of cities across the UK yesterday.

The People’s Assembly said tens of thousands took to the streets to highlight “real hardships”.

Unions have complained that Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s spring statement did nothing to allay fears about soaring fuel bills, low pay and rising inflation. And the lifting of the energy price cap last

Friday creates an “impossible choice for many” to eat or heat, said the People’s Assembly.

A spokesperson for the campaign group said: “Public outrage over the cost-of-living crisis is growing fast and our response is gaining momentum.”

The TUC is calling for an emergency budget. Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who spoke at the London demo, said: “With rising fuel, food and energy bills, the soaring cost of living is pushing millions into poverty, and the disgusting treatment of the sacked P&O workers needs urgent action from the Government.

“Demonstrations are taking place all over the country, with thousands coming together to demand redistribution of wealth and decent wages for all, as well as justice for P&O workers.”

Ex-labour MP Laura Pidcock, national secretary of the People’s

Assembly, added: “What people are experiencing is intolerable.”

Hundreds rallied at Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester and Grey’s Monument, Newcastle.

There were also events in Bournemouth, Bristol, Cardiff, Cambridge, Coventry, Derby, Doncaster, Hanley, Hull, Ipswich, Lancaster, Leicester, Liverpool, Milton Keynes, Peterborough, Portsmouth, Preston, Redcar, Sheffield and Southampton.
