Probably the best news in the World Cup

Qatar 2022 bosses lay on beach bar

BEER we go! England fans will be able to sup pints at one-off beach bars set up for the Qatar World Cup.

The normally dry Gulf state is relaxing the rules to bring joy to thousands of supporters.

The bad news is a drink could cost a fortune. Alcohol is normally only sold in hotels – where a pint of Stella Artois costs £11.

The booze news came hours after England were told their first round opponents will include the US and Iran.

The team – including star striker Harry Kane – will also face the winner of a play-off between Wales, Scotland and Ukraine.

Berthold Trenkel, chief operating officer of Qatar Tourism, told the Sunday People: “There will be alcohol available in more places.

“We will be opening up some beach clubs where beer will also be available. Fans will also be able to buy beer at kiosks once they are inside the perimeter of the stadiums.”

But he said only zeroalcohol beer will be available inside grounds.

Fans were urged to avoid heavy sessions and respect local traditions. Qatar has strict rules about public behaviour.

Yesterday, FIFA announced its schedule. The Three Lions play their first game against Iran on the opening day, November 21, in Al Khor – just eight days after the Premier League pauses for a six-week break.

Their second game, against the United States, is in Doha on November 25.

And the third is four days later against the play-off winner, also in the capital.

England have never played Wales or Scotland in the World Cup finals.

Spurs fan Fil Sollof, 57, booked his flights last week and welcomed the booze ruling. He said: “Getting a beer at a beach club sounds great. The vast majority of England fans will respect the rules and traditions of Qatar. Now the draw has been made I’m excited – and England have a great chance.”

There is only one off-licence in Qatar and you need a permit to buy alcohol there.
