VLADIMIR Putin’s retreating troops are feared to be boobytrapping corpses.
Ukraine says Russian soldiers leaving Kyiv have been laying mines and tripwires in homes, equipment – even among the dead.
The news came as hopes grew last night that the countries were edging tentatively closer to peace.
The Russian Interfax agency reported that a Ukrainian negotiator has said Russia has indicated that the peace treaty drafts are advanced enough now to allow for direct consultations between Putin and Zelensky.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin threatened to target British weapons as they are shipped to Ukraine.
It follows an online video apparently showing a Russian chopper being shot down by a Starstreak missile from the UK, which has already sent 4,000 anti-tank weapons. Russia’s ambassador Andrey Kelin said: “Our armed forces will view them as a legitimate target if those supplies get through the Ukrainian border.”
Ukraine claims it has taken back at least 30 towns near the capital. Russia’s retreat in the area was confirmed by the MOD. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said: “Withdrawal is slow but noticeable. Somewhere they are expelled with battles. Somewhere they leave on their own.”
He said 3,000 people had escaped besieged port Mariupol. At least 5,000 have been killed in the city and 160,000 who remain are short of food, water and power.

But it’s hard to have any sympathy. It doesn’t matter to them if people are dying in Ukraine.”
The whistleblower said one super-rich Russian wife collapsed in tears after bespoke electrical fittings ordered for her £10million St George’s estate mansion were blocked.
Another Surrey pair were stranded in Dubai when their first-class flight was cancelled.

“They care only about themselves and how the sanctions are starting to affect their champagne lifestyle.

“But that’s all changing now and it’s good to see them having to adjust to their new place in the world.
“I laugh at their bleating. I get five calls a day from Russian billionaires asking me to help them with blocked credit card problems.
“They ask if they can use my address when they apply for new cards to avoid the sanctions. I just put the phone down. I can’t talk to these people any more – they should understand what is happening and what their leader is doing.”
Foreign Secretary Liz Truss plans to sanction even more oligarchs. She said: “There are over 100 Russian billionaires. We have to make it deeply painful for those that support Putin.”
