Terriers start on new tale

- BY NEIL GOULDING

HUDDERSFIELD were on the cusp of glory last season – just 90 minutes away from a memorable return to the Premier League.

But an agonising 1-0 defeat by Nottingham Forest in the Championship Play-off Final saw their dreams shattered.

And less than two months later – and just before the start of the new season on Friday night – the Terriers find themselves with plenty of problems to fix if they are going to mount a serious promotion challenge again.

They have lost out on a reported £150million for not securing a Premier League slot, but, whatever the financial downside, it is on the pitch where they have really felt the impact since that horror day at Wembley.

Spanish boss Carlos Corberan sensationally quit earlier this month, despite his heroics in nearly guiding the club to the top flight last term.

Danny Schofield, who played for the club for over a decade and was more recently the club’s academy coach, beat a string of top names to land the top job.

Lewis O’brien and Harry Toffolo have left the Terriers to, ironically, play for Forest in the Premier League.

But the Yorkshire club have signed Japan defender Yuta Nakayama and attacking midfielder Jack Rudoni, 21, from Wimbledon.

They also snapped up former Millwall midfielder Conor Mahoney, 25, as a free agent, as well as midfielder David Kasumu, 22, from MK Dons.

“The successes we had last season, and then for Carlos to resign, it’s been a massive shock,” said new top dog Schofield (above).

“But this is a massive honour – and one I’m going to work

very hard to make a success.”
