A new gold dream for GB rowers

- By Will Jennings in Munich

BRITAIN’S rowers reckon they have laid down a major

Olympic marker after a memorable morning.

UK stars grabbed four golds – including three in a row – in the women’s and men’s four, women’s quadruple sculls and men’s eight events at the city’s 1972 Olympic Regatta Centre.

Team GB endured a torrid time in Tokyo last summer as just one silver and bronze medal marked their worst Games return for almost half a century.

But Sam Nunn, who helped Britain’s men’s four triumph yesterday, believes times are changing ahead of Paris 2024.

The 25-year-old said: “Events like these are massively important for us to find out about the pressure of major championships.

“I think we really managed to pull together as a crew and collectively work as a stepping stone for what’s to come.”

Rowan Mckellar, part of the women’s gold-medal four along with Heidi Long, Samantha Redgrave and Rebecca Shorten, added: “We didn’t have the best time in Tokyo and all knew we were better than that.

“We knew that with a few more years that will definitely come and I think we’re managing that – starting this year.”

Britain’s gymnasts also grabbed a medal by winning silver in the team event.

All around silver medallist Alice Kinsella, 21, joined forces with Jessica and Jennifer Gadirova, Ondine Achampong and Georgia-mae Fenton to finish behind Italy and ahead of hosts Germany on the podium.

While in the velodrome, Charlie Tanfield and Josie Knight narrowly missed out on medals in the individual pursuit and Jack Carlin and Hamish Turnbull booked their places in today’s sprint final.
