Koeman: We won’t win Euros like that

- ADRIAN STILES

HOLLAND boss Ronald Koeman says his side will have to be much better than they were against Scotland to stand a chance of winning the Euros this summer.

The Dutch coach watched on as his side eventually won 4-0 on Friday, but two late goals were flattering to the hosts.

Koeman was not satisfied with his team’s performance afterwards and said: “We already started badly. The game was restless, sloppy, while Scotland were close.

“Only in the final phase did things improve, when the spaces on the field became larger. But before that it was difficult for an hour and we also made unnecessary mistakes.”

Koeman played Georginio Wijnaldum and Memphis Depay from the start after missing previous fixtures and Koeman saw what he needed to from them.

He added: “With Memphis, you can see that he is a great player, even though he had a few moments of losing the ball.

“He creates danger with his creativity. He is an added value to our attack.

“I thought Wijnaldum’s game was sufficient.

“At times you could see that he still has a knack for depth. I don’t have the feeling that he can no longer bring what he brought before.”

AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders was the bright spot for Holland and netted his first international goal to get things started, before rounding off his evening with an assist for the final goal.

He said: “The moment I hit that ball I already had the feeling that it could fly in. I think this is one of the best goals I have scored.

“We were sloppy when we won the ball.

“Only with the opening goal did we keep the ball in the team longer. Then more spaces were created. That was also the difference with the second half. We kept the ball in the team longer and Scotland could no longer get ahead of it.”
