Thailand’s first female tourism minister, Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, wants rich holidaymakers to flock to her country for its beauty and luxury – NOT its steamy red light districts.
But those working in the industry say curbs on brothels and go- go bars would damage a flagging economy that has struggled to recover after political turmoil and a military takeover that took the country to the brink of recession just two years ago.

Ms Wattanavrangkul played down the role of the sex industry, claming: “Tourists don’t come to Thailand for such a thing. They come here for our beautiful culture.
“We want Thailand to be about quality tourism. We want the sex industry gone.”
But Prof Jeremy Brandt of the University of Phuket said: “If the government stops the sex trade they will have a revolution on their hands.
“And it will be the katoeys – the chickboys – who will lead the bloody rebellion. They would be the first to suffer in any crackdown on the sex industry.
“If the generals who rule Thailand are happy to provoke the wrath of these big- cocked, big- boobed shemales, they are braver men than me.
“Terrifying creatures when roused. Utterly terrifying.”
