SUFFOLK Strangler Steve Wright “went berserk” when Tommy Mair, the neo- nazi loon convicted of killing MP Jo Cox, was last week handed a whole- life sentence.
Mair shot and stabbed the 41- year- old mum- of- two at her constituency surgery in Birstall, West Yorks, on June 16 this year.
Last week trial judge Mr Justice Wilkie sentenced loner Mair to life in prison and issued an order that he should never be released – a whole- life term.
Raging
That infuriated 58- year- old serial killer Wright, serving his own full- life term at HMP Belmarsh in south- east London.
A fellow lag said: “Wrighty went absolutely berserk when he heard Tommy Mair had got a full- life term.
“He reckons that such a sentence should only be handed out to serial killers, like him, or people who have killed a whole load of people on a spree.
“He was raging, ‘ This bloke’s only killed one person! With a poxy home- made gun! Where’s the skill in that?! Where’s the dedication?!’
“He spent the rest of the day muttering that they hand out whole- life terms ‘ like sweeties’ and that in the modern world it’s ‘ prizes for all’.
“We tried to console him, saying that Mair’s sentence in no way detracted from the seriousness of his crimes, but he was having none of it.”
Between October 30 and December 10, 2006, Wright murdered five sex workers in Ipswich, Suffolk.
Forensic evidence led to his arrest on December 19. He was found guilty of all five murders on February 21, 2008.
The following day, he was sentenced to life imprisonment, and the judge recommended he should never be released. LAST week serial killer Stephen Port, 41, joined the small, elite group of prisoners serving whole life sentences in this country, when he was jailed for the murder of four young gay men he met through online dating app Grindr.
