PRISON guards who killed an inmate by BOILING him alive won’t face charges.

Inmate Darren Rainey was doing time for cocaine possession when he died at the hands of screws.

They took Rainey out of his cell and forced him into a shower cubicle after he’d smeared himself with shit, before locking him inside.

The guards then turned the water up to 80C and walked away.

A fellow prisoner said he heard the 50- year- old schizophrenic screaming: “I can’t take it anymore”.

Two hours later, the guards returned to check on Rainey but they found him lying dead in three inches of water.

His skin was red raw and had started to peel away from his body and bits of skin floated in the water around him.

Rainey’s death, in June 2012, sparked a probe which reported guards had rigged the shower to punish inmates.

It also found that prison guards at DEAD: Darren Rainey Dade Correctional Institution, South Florida, would douse prisoners with chemicals, starve them and force them to fight.

Now Miami- Dade State Attorney has released a report calling his death an accident, clearing all four guards involved of any wrongdoing.

Disease

Medical examiner, Emma Lew, said Rainey’s death was a combination of his schizophrenia, heart disease and confinement in the shower space.

She said schizophrenic people can have nervous system reactions that trigger a heart attack if they have an underlying condition.

Lew said: “Placing an inmate who has defecated on himself in a shower to decontaminate him is not conduct that is criminally reckless.”
