Romanian criminals flee ‘ nasty’ Norwegians
BEGGARS are flocking back to eastern Europe after a TV show claimed immigrant panhandlers were linked to prostitution and organised crime.
In the Norwegian documentary, called Lykkelandet ( The Land of Happiness), hidden cameras followed residents of a house in Bergen connected to the Romanian begging community.
The film shows women involved in begging by day and prostitution and bank card theft at night, while large sums were shown to be sent from Norway to Romania.
The documentary has stirred significant debate in the Nordic country , which has traditionally been seen as quite tiresome in its political correctness.
Beggars
Now even Prime Minister Erna Solberg says that Norwegians should “think through” whether they give money to beggars.
The change of heart is causing many Romanians to scurry back to their homeland.
Hostel manager Marcos Amano said: “At least 11 people have today bought flight tickets back to Romania. They say it is unsafe and unpleasant to be in Bergen now.
“One person said that he was called a ‘ dog’ when he was having a poo in the street.”
The PM said: “People can think about whether they are supporting organised crime or a poor individual.”
