NEIGHBOURS IN UPROAR OVER ROLF HARRIS TOPIARY TRIBUTE

- By SIMON DEAN simon@ sundaysport. co. uk

JAILED: Disgraced celeb Harris in 2014 IF you were going to immortalise a public figure in privet, celeb sex nonce Rolf Harris would probably not be at the top of your list.

But back in 2012 when youth worker Tony Watkins began his project to sculpt the entertainer in foliage, Harris was still a loved TV presenter and personality.

It was only the following spring that Aussie Harris became entangled in the twisted branches of Operation Yewtree.

And it was 2014 before a jury returned a guilty verdict on charges of kiddy- touching.

Former Scout leader Tony, of Aldershot, Hants, said: “Most people would have stopped the moment Rolf was arrested. But I believe the concept of innocent until proven guilty is what keeps us safe from tyranny and raises us above the lesser nations of the world.

“So you can image that when Rolf was found guilty and given the indelible stamp of a nonce, I was gutted.

Wrestled

“I had a seven- foot topiary sculpture of one of Britain’s most notorious kiddy- touchers in my front garden.

“I thought long and hard and wrestled with my conscience. I had many sleepless nights but in the end decided to keep the topiary Rolf.

“I have put many years into it and it would be sheer vandalism to cut it down.

“Obviously, I don’t advertise it as Rolf Harris. I just tell people it’s a random man with glasses and a beard.”

But the former choirmaster’s neighbours are less than impressed. One told Sunday Sport: “Until Rolf Harris was arrested, Tony told all and sundry that he was doing a Rolf hedge.

“We all expected it to come down when Harris was jailed but Tony’s kept going. We can’t believe it. Our street has got a giant privet nonce ICON: Rolf was still a much- loved star back in 2012, when foliage was first sculpted in pride of place. People come to see it from as far afield as Goldaming and Esher.

“We’re known as ‘ Nonce Street’. That can’t be good for house prices, can it?”

Meanwhile, the real Harris, 87, was released from prison in May after serving three years for a string of historic sex crimes.

It was reported last week that four houses near the disgraced ex- entertainer’s plush private estate near Maidenhead, Berks, have been put on the market.

The source added: “Rolf isn’t seen out and about a lot, but for parents his dubious past is enough of a reason for them to want to leave.”
