The photos were leaked early on Friday via thousands of fake Twitter accounts which are maintained by MI5 staff with the help of tech boffins from GCHQ in Cheltenham.

It’s believed that Frau Markel was woken at 2am to be told of the leak.

And she is said to have snarled: “Englische Schweinhunds!” when she was told that MI5 operatives were believed to be behind it.

European Commission President Jean- Claude Junker was “indisposed” until 11am and was then said to be “too unwell to respond to this outrage”.

Merkel, who has been boss Kraut since 2005, is widely seen as the most influential leader in the European Union – though her tight reign has been rocked in recent months by rows over immigration.

Last night Ken Holst, 56, a lecturer in German politics at West Lancashire University, told Sunday Sport: “Theresa May is showing she means business and is not afraid to play hard- ball.

“But splashing photos of Angela Merkel’s minge all over the internet? I am very fearful of how Frau Merkel may respond.”
