THE creator of Peaky Blinders has said he was inspired by how Americans turn their history into “something other than what it probably was”.

Steven Knight ( below), whose Birmingham- based gangster drama set in the aftermath of the First World War has won legions of fans across the world, said he wanted to make a “heightened” version of what life was like at the time.

Knight said he was inspired by his own parents’ childhoods in the Small Heath area of the city, where his mother was a bookies’ runner at the age of nine and his father’s uncles were illegal bookmakers.

He said: “When they were kids everything was big and glamorous and fantastic, so they mythologised what was around them.

“I wanted to do what the Americans do with their history, which is they turn it into something other than what it probably was, like with the Chicago gangs, and do that without embarrassment.” DAVID Schwimmer has said police were “a little disappointed” when they ruled him out as a suspect in a theft in Blackpool.

The star hit the headlines when fans noticed a suspect captured on CCTV leaving a restaurant carrying what appeared to be a carton of cans bore a striking resemblance to the actor.

Schwimmer said: “I got a message from a buddy saying ‘ Have you seen this from Blackpool Police?

“The police had posted something that was really funny. They were a little disappointed that they had ruled me out as a suspect; it wasn’t me.

“I couldn’t resist responding.”

He later Tweeted a video of him scurrying through a store carrying a carton of beer.” RENÉE Zellweger said working in a STRIP CLUB during her college years taught her life- long lessons.

The star of Netflix’s What/ If, opened up about waitressing at Sugar’s, in Austin, while attending the University of Texas, to help pay the bills.

She said: “I worked as a cocktail waitress in a strip club. One gentleman would tip me $ 100 every time he came in because I think he felt sorry for me. He saw me as a poor student.” But the pity was unnecessary, Renée, 50, said. “Did I feel sorry for myself? Never! Financing my own way through college was a defining marker for me.”

It also made her a great tipper, she noted.

“Now I overtip,” she said. “I know the difference I can make in someone’s day.”

Zellweger said she’s “not embarrassed” about her cocktail waitress job , noting that it “taught me so much.”

And, for the record, Zellweger was always clothed on her shifts. K- ICK- OFF: Emma K can’t wait for the football to start FINALLY, after long, barren summer – well, apart from some pretty exciting cricket – football is back!
