PAIR ‘DRY HUMPED’ IN BROAD DAYLIGHT

This does not help the tourist industry – Judge

TWO men who engaged in sexual activity in broad daylight in a Welsh village have been spared jail.

Residents and visitors to Fairbourne near Barmouth were appalled to see David William Stewart and Richard Paul Curragh “dry humping” in the afternoon on September 10, a judge heard.

Several people called police to report what they had seen.

Curragh, 66, and Stewart, 54, admitted charges of outraging public decency when they appeared before Caernarfon Magistrates Court.

Both men were said to have been drinking heavily before the incident.

Judge Gwyn Jones said the Fairbourne area is popular with visitors and tourism is important to the area.

He added: “Acting in the way you did does not help the tourism industry.

“I am satisfied that custody is more than justified, but your timely guilty pleas will allow you to work with the probation service.”

Prosecutor Sarah Marsh said the police were called by several people shortly after 1.30pm.

She told the court: “There is a grassy area near a path that leads to the beach and is close to the railway line.

“Witnesses said they saw two men engaged in sexual activity.

“One of them had pulled his trousers down and both were arrested.”

Both men said they had drunk strong cider, brown ale and cheap wine, but Stewart denied that any sexual activity had taken place.

Yet the court heard he had a conviction for a sexual offence dating back to 1984.

Huw Roberts, for Stewart, said he now accepts the incident took place, adding: “He is deeply sorry for what happened.”

Both men were handed 10- week prison sentences suspended for 12 months and given a 6pm and 6am curfew.
