“But in recent years, the issue has become entangled in so- called ‘ identity politics’, with suggestion­s that the new 007 should be a woman, a member of an ethnic minority or even a gay.

“Well, for my money, that sort of speculatio­n damages the brand and I don’t want to spend my time in the role defending my ‘ white privilege’ – or whatever snowflakes call it these days.

“I’m a white, straight man – just like the

James Bond that author Ian Fleming created.”

He added: “Obviously, I was sworn to secrecy after I signed a contract but real damage is being done to the James Bond brand and I felt I had to speak out to protect it.”

Last week producer Barbara Broccoli waded into the speculatio­n row over Craig’s replacemen­t, telling industry newspaper Variety: “James Bond can be of any colour, but he is male.

“I’m not interested in taking a male character and having a woman play it.”
