LAST week Leicester became the first area in Britain to be subject to local lockdown measures.

While the rest of England celebrated pubs reopening, poor Leicester sank back into the dark night of restrictions.

All non- essential shops closed after 800- plus cases were recorded in the West Midlands city since mid- June.

And the area accounted for around 10 percent of all positive tests in the UK last week.

Schools closed on Thursday and will not reopen until next term, amid fears that an unusually high incidence in children is driving the spread.

The 59- year- old Match of the Day host is active online where he is never shy to parade his right- on credentials. So many hoped the reintroduction of lockdown in his West Midlands home city would mean a temporary end to his constant tweeting and frequent appearances on telly.

One Twitter user called user@ gorbalsgoebbels asked: “Does Gary Lineker still live in Leicester? Looking for some benefits of local lockdown.”

And another named unkind @ MoodySlayerUK wrote: “It’s Leicester, no- one cares. Surround the place with a big wall and razor wire. Also, throw

Gary Lineker back in there.”

Meanwhile Richard Scott wrote: “Does Gary Lineker still live in Leicester? There could at least be one silver haired lining to this particular cloud...”

Elsewhere @ ChuckleRed commented: “As long as Lineker has been confined to Leicester.”

Finally, @ simonryan80 posted: “If Leicester is gonna be lockdown- ed I hope that means Gary Lineker is quarantined, both physically and verbally.”
