A DEATH Row lag has avoided execution – by dropping dead of COVID- 19.

Richard Stitely died of the Chinese Death Plague at San Quentin State Prison, California, which is in the midst of a major coronavirus outbreak – infecting more than a THIRD of its inmate population.

Stitely, 71, had spent nearly 30 years on Death Row for raping and murdering a woman.

He was tested for the virus after his death and the Marin Co Coroner’s Office confirmed the positive results.

The official cause of Stitely’s death is still being determined, the coroner’s office said.

Figures show that 1,347 of San Quentin’s roughly 3,700 prisoners had tested positive for COVID- 19.

The majority of the prison’s cases, 1,079, occurred in just the last two weeks.

MORE than 73,000 weddings and civil partnerships in England have been postponed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, according to new estimates.

Couples in England will be able to tie the knot for the first time in more than three months this weekend, but the Office for National Statistics suggests that around 73,600 ceremonies have been postponed since the lockdown began in March.
