GINI STAYS AS THIAGO ARRIVES AT CHAMPS

- By ANDY MILLOM

JURGEN Klopp insists he doesn’t have to sell Gini Wijnaldum to make way for Thiago Alcantara.

The Liverpool boss is suddenly blessed with loads of options in midfield after the Spain international arrived from Bayern Munich.

The club has had a policy of balancing the books which means Klopp should have to find £25m from sales to pay for the 29- year- old.

The most obvious man to go is Wijnaldum as he’s in the final year of his contract and Barcelona are interested in a £15m deal.

But Klopp is adamant that Alcantara’s arrival will not lead to a sale in this window. He said: “It has no impact on anybody’s future in a negative way.

“If you want, it’s not like somebody has to leave because somebody comes in or whatever.

“It’s just about timing. Sometimes you buy before you sell, sometimes you sell before you buy.

“Sometimes different scenarios. Sometimes you don’t buy now but you buy later and sometimes you earn the money back in different ways.

“The only thing which is always true with us is what we earned on football, we spend on football.

“That is the short summary of the philosophy of the club. One of the key points.

We cannot just say ‘ This year we need this and that, and we cannot afford it’ – and I wouldn’t insist on it.

“But this season we worked constantly on improvement. Sometimes people like it, sometimes they like it later.

“I cannot promise we will do something more and I wouldn’t but I cannot say it is 100%

sure we don’t do anything.

“It’s the situation, it is developing a situation so anything could happen.

“If a player comes to me and asks me ‘ Boss I want to go’ — I don’t expect that but it can happen — then we have to react.”

Klopp is also throwing his weight behind having seven subs this season rather than five.

He said: “If we stay in all comps, it will be tough all season.

“My first concern is player welfare. It makes the situation more tricky and we will realise that in the next few weeks.

“We’ll try to prepare for it.”
