I bought the festive Radio Times for £5.25 …now we can’t afford Christmas dinner for the bairn!

WHAT better way to celebrate the birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ than sitting blankly in front of a TV set, dumbly consuming hour after dismal hour of “festive” programming?

Well, to do that properly, there’s one thing you simply MUST have on your Chrimbo shopping list…

The legendary Christmas Radio Times.

Since the ancient era, Britons have sat down with a highlighter to mark out the “can’t miss” telly over the festive period.

But this year there’s a problem for hard- pressed families.

Dad Tony King has bought the Xmas edition every year but after purchasing the 2021 edition, he’s now SKINT!

And the £ 5.25 cover price of the Radio Times has left him and his family facing a grim Yule with NO CHRISTMAS DINNER!

Tony, 45, of Crewe, Cheshire, harrumphed: “We’d set aside a tenner to get all the Chrimbo dinner stuff and the Chrimbo Radio Times, of course.

“I went into the newsagent and was stunned to be told it cost me £ 5.25!

“That left us with just £ 4.75 for our Chrimbo dinner! We were looking forward to some pressed turkey roll with mash and beans.

“Now we’ll be lucky to share a frozen lasagne from Iceland!”

He added: “What makes it particularly galling is that when we went through the Radio Times, the telly this Christmas is all shite.

“Mrs Brown’s Boys on BBC1 and a Shoplifters at Christmas double bill on Channel Five appear to be the ‘ highlights’.

“I’m just glad we got the lager in nice and early. We’ll give the kid the empty cans as presents.”

This year’s 292- page starstudded Radio Times includes a comprehensive 14- day guide to what’s on, and has interviews with Julie Walters, David Tennant, Billy Connolly, Lin Manuel Miranda, Michael Sheen and the stars of Strictly.

Helpline

Plus, a five- star glamorous photoshoot, and top Christmas dinner tips, with television’s finest chefs Monica Galetti, John Torode, Marcus Waring and Gregg Wallace.

One reader said: “John Torode and Gregg Wallace at Christmas? Have they started showing that Christmas helpline number to stop you offing yourself !”
