Stokes set for skipper after Root resigns

BEN Stokes looks the most likely man to take over the England Test captaincy after Joe Root resigned from the role.

The Yorkshireman decided that five years in the role was enough and it was time to let somebody else have a go.

The 31- year- old has called time after a shocking run that saw England win just one of their past 17 Test matches. The Three Lions clocked up a new record of five Test series without a win with another 1- 0 defeat against the West Indies.

Now English cricket is looking for a new skipper – along with a new chairman, director of men’s cricket and men’s head coach.

Root said: “After returning from the Caribbean tour and having time to reflect, I have decided to step down as England men’s Test captain.

“It has been the most challenging decision I have had to make in my career but having discussed this with my family and those closest to me; I know the timing is right.

“I am immensely proud to have captained my country and will look back on the past five years with enormous pride.

“It has been an honour to have done the job and to have been a custodian of what is the pinnacle of English cricket.

“I have loved leading my country, but recently it’s hit home how much of a toll it has taken on me and

the impact it has had on me away from the game.”

It looks like Stokes is the only man to take over given that he’s just about the only player guaranteed his place in the side apart from Root. Another candidate is Stuart Broad.

Stokes is vice- captain but has had to take time out of the game in recent years. He has led England in just one Test but it’s hard to see who else could come in and do the job.

Stokes said: “Been a great ride with you my friend. Watching one of my great mates lead us all out on to the field was a privilege.

“You have given everything to English cricket and we all want to say thank you for your sacrifices and hard work.”

Root will still be the team’s best player and added: “I am excited to continue representing the Three Lions and producing performances that will enable the team to succeed.”
