Smoking-ban lags spark up football pitch grass

Inmates at HMP Channings Wood, Devon – which introduced a smoking ban last year – make illicit cigarettes by drying out the grass and mixing it with tea from teabags.

They then tear out paper from library books and add the ‘ tobacco’ mixture before making ‘ roll- ups’ and puffing away in their cells.

Because lighters and matches are also banned, lags are cutting through the flexes of in- cell kettles to get a spark – risking a potentially fatal 240V shock – to light their contraband fags, a prison report revealed last week.

A report into the prison from the HM Chief Inspector of Prisons out last week said that there is a ‘ constant shortage of kettles’ at the jail, because of lags keep cutting flexes and wrecking kettles.

It also states that many prisoners are turning to hooch – homemade alcohol – and former legal high Spice since the smoking ban came in, as a substitute for cigarettes.
