Nothing to read in Ellis Short at Stadium of Light

DAVID Moyes insists nothing should be read into owner Ellis Short’s presence at the Stadium of Light for the goalless draw against Burnley.

Sunderland’s American supremo travelled to Wearside and met Moyes before the game but there is no indication that Short is preparing to make a managerial change, despite the gap between the Black Cats and safety widening to seven points.

Asked about Short’s presence, Moyes said: “I spoke to him today. Everything was fine.

“I suppose if you own a football club, you are entitled to come and watch it.”

The draw ended Sunderland’s threegame losing streak, but the Black Cats were left kicking themselves for failing to convert the chances that would have turned this into a priceless victory.

“We made the chances to win the game today,” said Moyes.

“I think we made more chances today than we did at Crystal Palace [where Sunderland won 4-0], but everything we hit that day went in. Today we had the chances but just didn’t finish.

“That’s not to fault the players. They tried to do everything they could.

“We’ve nearly got every forward player we have available to us on the pitch.

“It’s just that if a couple of the opportunities had fallen to Jermain, it would have helped!

“But, as we have been saying all season, we need other people to score as well.

“We went with two up front and tried to get at Burnley.

“We didn’t do it so well in the first half, but did it better in the second half.

“To a man, the players did everything they could.”

Sunderland had at least five clearcut chances in the second half, but Billy Jones and Seb Larsson both missed the target while Fabio Borini and Adnan Januzaj were denied by Burnley keeper Tom Heaton.

Moyes said: “It was always going to be difficult against Burnley.

“They made it tough for us, as they did against Liverpool.

“On another day we would have hoped one of the players - Billy [Jones], Fabio [Borini], Adnan [Januzaj], would have finished one of the chances.”
