When the UK joined the EU in 1973, it was dubbed the “dirty man of Europe” because of its out-of-control pollution.
With the influence of climate change deniers in the right wing press and the Tory habit of ditching “red tape” – ie regulations – to the benefit of its supporters, expect Lindisfarne’s Fog on the Tyne to make a comeback.
But to worry about all these things is to be a “bad loser” or to be “doing Britain down”. Those who were – and still are – against Brexit are supposed to suck it in and get over it.
Yet it was Nigel Farage on referendum night, after convincing himself early on it was going to be a 52%-48% defeat for Leave, who said if it proved that close, another referendum in the near future could not be ruled out.
As it happened, it was a 51.7% to 48.3% win for Leave. So, using the parameters laid down by Farage, let’s do it all again. And the sooner the better.
It’s my democratic right to fight for what I believe in and, for those who were celebrating on Wednesday, look at who you were celebrating with.
