Magpies are contained by dodgy calls and pratfalls

-

NEWCASTLE United were cruelly denied at the death by Leeds United on Good Friday courtesy of a 95thminute equaliser which left Rafa Benitez seething.

Captain Jamaal Lascelles’ header crossed the line in the 67th minute just before Rob Green could claw it away to hand the Magpies the lead.

Although that looked set to be the winner, the division’s top scorer ghosted in behind the Newcastle defence to sidefoot in an injury-time leveller to break Magpies hearts.

Those certainly were not the only talking points from an excellent endto-end game at St James’ Park.

So here, NUFC writer Chris Waugh runs you through some of the moments you may have missed from the 1-1 draw...

In the final minutes of the game, what appeared to be a rogue Leeds fan who had found his way into the Gallowgate End suddenly invaded the pitch. After bowing down in front of Rob Green, he then ran across to Pon- tus Jansson for a hug – but the Lilywhites’ defender pushed him away.

Security then ran on to the pitch to remove the invader, only for him to fall flat on his backside.

Unfortunately for Newcastle, the temporary delay while the invader was removed contributed to the time added on at the end – which we all know proved extremely costly.

Newcastle could easily have found themselves 1-0 down inside the open-

Karl Darlow saves a shot (left), United players protest to ref Chris Kavanagh (top) and top right, the pitch invader ing 10 minutes – but for the woodwork and Karl Darlow. First, Alfonso Pedraza curled a 20-yard effort on to the crossbar, then Kemar Roofe followed up to guide the rebound at goal - only for Darlow to stand tall and make an excellent block on the line.
