Heed self-destruct to

- BY JEFF BOWRON

Wes York (left) had a decent chance to open the scoring for Gateshead yesterday, but they went down to a 2-0 defeat GATESHEAD left their worst to last as an abject final-day display ended in defeat after visitors Bromley scored twice late on.

It was the worst performance of the season at the International Stadium, the Heed losing their last three games on home soil.

They ended with a whimper to send the Heed Army home for the summer with long faces, despite a creditable eighth-place finish.

Gateshead bossed the first half as Bromley sat back, with the Ravens waiting 36 minutes for their first effort at goal.

But Gateshead lacked inspiration in the second period and contributed to their downfall when woeful defending was punished by Louis Dennis.

The Heed had flirted with the playoffs but imploded when it mattered, winning only one of their last eight games.

They lacked passion yesterday – until a late flare-up brought a flurry of cards – leaving manager Neil Aspin frustrated and disappointed.

Aspin watched the first hour from the stand, his emergence in the dugout for the final half-hour failing to inject any desire into his side.

It left the Gateshead-born former Leeds United and Port Vale defender less than amused.

“It was a very poor way to end the season,” said Aspin.

“We were in control of the game in the first half without hurting the opposition. We didn’t play at all in the second half. I wouldn’t have wanted to watch what I saw today and that’s not good enough.

“It was two mistakes again for the goals. They were two bad goals in a game in which neither side looked like scoring.

“We can’t accept performances like today. If I don’t get results, then as a manager I lose my job.

“A lot of the players can perform better than they did and the defeat leaves a sour taste in my mouth going into the summer.”
