Plenty of fish for those who made it out

- BY PAUL ARMSTRONG

THE strong winds and heavy rain of the last week had little effect on local waters, and those anglers who braved the conditions certainly reaped the benefits! Although the wet weather has continued this weekend, next week will see much drier conditions.

Torrential rain last Tuesday did not stop those fishing the second match in the Big Waters AC Evening Series enjoying the event, and it was good to see all species, including tench and crucian carp, coming to the net. Les Goreham took the honours with 2lb 12oz, followed by Dave Hambleton with 2lb 2oz and Steve Freer with 1lb 14oz.

Carp and silver fish are feeding really well at Aldin Grange with the Match Lake and Blackbird both producing good high double-figure nets of most species.

Hundred pound-plus nets are now the norm at the Angel of the North, with both pleasure and competitive anglers achieving these memorable weights. Friday’s three-hour match on Bowes Lake . went to Forest Grump, with 123lb 7oz. John Nelson followed with 96lb 15oz and Ethan Bradley with 94lb 13oz. Saturday saw Lookout Lake host the Pairs Silver Fish event, which was won by Andy Lepatovrel and Dave Smiddy. Sunday’s match on Lookout was won by John Dryden with 122lb 12oz, followed by Forest Grump with 109lb 10oz and Derek Fox with 29lb 8oz.

Wansbeck & Cramlingtons visit to the Oaks for a Summer Series match was won by Chris Weddell with 65lb 2oz, ahead of Les Evans with 42lb 12oz and Keith Melnyk with 35lb 9oz.

Today, Ryton & District fish a match in the Tilcon Pond, and opens take place on Woodlands, The Oaks and the Angel. On Tuesday the BWAC Evening Series continues at Dissington Pond and the Tyneside branch of the Pike Anglers Club meet at the Blaydon Cricket Club.
