A DAD of a nine-year-old girl raped, murdered and hidden under floorboards told today how his daughter’s killer should remain behind bars until the day he dies.

Colin Bainbridge is eligible for parole in 2023 after he was jailed for life for the horrific killing of schoolgirl Laura Kane.

Odd-job man Bainbridge lured Laura from her home in Penshaw, near Sunderland, in August 1999. He raped her, suffocated her and hid her body under the floorboards of his home in Murton, County Durham.

Now, Laura’s father, Martin Kane, 57, has demanded the murderer remains in jail for the rest of his life, revealing how is dreading the day Bainbridge walks free.

Martin said: “All he got was a lousy 23 years, that’s it – 23 years for what he did.

“He should spend the rest of his life inside, same as other child-killers like Huntley and Brady.

“It will kill me the day he walks out of there. I think about it all the time, especially as it’s getting closer.

“I hope and pray he never walks free. I believe victims’ families should have a say with the parole board over when these people are allowed out.”

Laura disappeared on August 25 1999, from her home in Front Street. It would be 10 days before her body was found under the floorboards at Bainbridge’s home.

In June 2000, at Newcastle Crown Court, Bainbridge, nicknamed Billy Liar, was jailed for life, with the recommendation that he serve 24 years – although he had already served almost a year in custody.

Martin, who still lives in the North East, has since placed a plaque beside a tree he planted in memory of his daughter.

It today stands on the site where Laura died, Bainbridge’s former home which has since been knocked down.

He said: “I go there once a month and spend some time thinking and remembering.

“I just exist through each day now. It never goes away, the pain. Laura is on my mind, every minute of every day.”

To this day, Bainbridge continues to deny he killed the schoolgirl.

“In some ways I don’t want him to admit it,” added Martin, “because he would only be doing it to try to get out even earlier.

“I don’t even know which prison he’s in. I’d last heard he was in HMP Whitemoor but others have told me he was moved to Durham.”

Bainbridge will be in his 50s when eligible for release.
