Anglers on to a shore thing – and on boats

- BY ALAN CHARLTON

BOTH boat and shore anglers are making the most of the improved catches all along the coast.

There have been some nice cod taken down at Whitby where Sea Otter 2 has been landing up to 80 fish with quite a few into double figures, James Sheular taking one of 18lb.

The first of the porbeagle shark have also put in appearance with an angler on board Mistress taking one of around 200lb, but there have been no signs yet of any big halibut.

Anglers out on JFK TWO using baited hokkais have taken ling two at a time – Alan Trumpton taking two around 12lb in a haul of 15 fish including cod to 8lb.

Anglers out on Blue Eye 2 and Sapphire taking up to 40 fish with cod and ling to 8lb, with Paul King having a great day on Blue Eye 2.

Anglers fishing inshore off Amble and Craster are taking good numbers of cod and a few ling to 8lb.

Anglers on board Upholder are averaging around six to eight decent fish, Tony Crawford taking one of 8lb with many more fish being returned.

Cresswell Carrs has given private boat anglers excellent sport on light tackle with plenty of cod and a few pollock in the 2-4lb range with a few better cod and pollock going into double figures.

Marks from Tynemouth pier to St Mary’s also giving private boats plenty of action with cod in the 2-3lb range with the chance of a decent pollock, Arthur Smeaton took one of 6lb.

With the water clearing, shads have taken most of the cod from the wrecks with fresh mackerel, which at times have been hard to come by, account- ing for the ling, with small lures and worm baits taking most of the fish inshore.

Shore sport has also picked up with bags of four or five fish for a weight of 10-12lb taken from marks at Seahouses, Beadnell and Craster, with a few cod to 4lb from Marsden and Souter.

Mike Darling took his first spotted ray and a new SAR record at 2lb 10oz from Seaham pier.

The open beaches with the calmer conditions are giving mainly flounder, with a few plaice, bass and dab with the chance of a turbot.

Marks from Balcary to Kircudbright giving rays, dogfish odd smoothhound and conger.

The Mull of Galloway is now giving reasonable sport with pollock to 4lb on lures, wrasse on float-fished worm with conger, dogfish and huss on baits, with Luce Bay giving a mixture of pollock, whiting, codling, rays, huss, conger and odd tope from the boats.
