Batting first right move for Hetton

- Steve Clarke

IN the NEPL, Hetton Lyons decided to bat first at home to Tynemouth and made the right decision.

They amassed 240-8 declared, with Jonathan Malkin making 54, Chris Martin 50 and Jarvis Clay a rapid 60 off 72 balls, with David Hymers claiming 4-40 with the ball.

Robert Talbot then ripped through the Tynemouth batting with a brilliant 6-22, leaving the visitors in tatters at 35-8.

The innings was wrapped up in the 26th over, with Tynemouth all out for 72. Niall Piper batting at number nine, top scored with 20.

In the NYSD, Stokesley beat their fierce rivals Great Ayton by five wickets, when they met at Leven Park in this “local derby.”

Great Ayton batted first and made just 94 all out, with Aubrey Swanepoel the chief culprit with the ball, returning 4-24 and Richard Chandler ably backing him up with 3-9.

Chris Allinson top-scored with the bat, when he made 26.

The visitors made hard work of their target at first, but Sam Wilson made 35 not out, despite Walid Ghauri taking 3-7, to ease his team’s nerves and cut the deficit between the two sides to just five points, at the top of the league.

Consett had a comfortable nine wicket win in the NTSL at Leadgate, who batted first and scored 121 all out, with Dan Pyke taking 3-26 and David Richardson top scored with a half century (56).

Consett then made light work of the total required for the loss of one wicket, with Andy Stokoe making 54 and Gary Hunter 52 not out.

In the DCL, Esh Winning travelled to Castle Eden and recorded a narrow win, of just four runs.

Batting first, they made just 124 all out, with Daniel Wilkinson top scoring with 29, with Alan Unsworth taking (3-34) and Keith Bailey 3-33, with the ball.

When the home side batted, they fell agonisingly short with only five needed for victory, when they were all out for 120. Jamie Robinson ripped into the top order batsmen, taking a brilliant 5-17, with only opener Robbie McGlasham resisting with 40 runs to his name.

Meanwhile, Backworth had another good win in the NCL to keep their promotion push alive, when they travelled to Stobswood and won by four wickets.

The home side batted first and scored 110 all out, with Antony Wingfield and Adam Cook both scoring 17, with Mark Minto returning 4-40 and Chris Miller 3-17, with the ball.

In reply, Backworth lost two early wickets, but Mark Minto with 43 and Michael Nicholson 40, steadied the ship, to see their side home for the win.
