Opposes cycling hub plans

BEFORE AFTER

-

after Josh took part in the C2C ride for Maggie’s Cancer Charity a few years ago and felt there was a need in the area for a facility to cater for cyclists.

Mr Reece says they are “bombarded daily with messages of support and assistance” and around 1,700 people have so far signed a petition in favour of the scheme.

He added: “We strongly believe that the Battery is not under threat. Indeed, the development sits on land that is currently private and not accessible by the general public.

“We will increase the green space open to the general public – the garden in question will be open for all, not just the few. We will also provide a decked viewing area overlooking the mouth of the Tyne that you won’t actually be able to see from anywhere atop the Battery. In all, access to open space in the area will grow by 2%.

“The main Spanish Battery area will remain untouched and open to visitors as normal during the construction phase.

“We also believe that this area is not an entirely quiet place. An independent survey showed that 5,186 people passed the site over one weekend (May 26-28), not to mention the plethora of events that take place there every year.

“We also believe that vehicular traffic will decrease. This is not a car hub – one of its core principles is that of getting on your bike and getting some fresh air.

“We will provide a community focused development and gateway amenity for the thousands of people who visit this area every year.

“As the development does not have any elevation above ground level, views will remain intact. You will not be able to see the building from 95% of the Battery.

“The great news is that all of the planning material is now on the council planning portal for all to see and understand.

“This will now give everyone the chance to see the proposals in detail and then decide for themselves.

“The region is renowned for its friendly welcome and hospitality. We hope that we can reflect this to the thousands of visitors who already visit our fantastic coastline.” How the site at Spanish Battery could look if the proposed Tynemouth cycle hub is approved
