Elliot in frame for kick-off Number 1

Aarons has suffered more than his fair share of bad luck with Newcastle on the injury front but the jet-heeled winger seems to be getting back to the player that burst on to the scene in pre-season in 2014.

He skinned the Mainz full-back a few times during his second-half run-out.

But perhaps more importantly, he seems to be getting up and dusting him- j , les entre-

The Republic of Ireland goalkeeper was rested as a precaution for the Magpies’ trip to Germany to face Mainz 05 yesterday.

But unless Rafa Benitez lands one of his goalkeeping targets in the next fortnight, Elliot is believed to be in line to play against Tottenham Hotspur on August 13.

United boss Benitez went public with his stance on Dutch international Tim Krul and it is understood that the longserving stopper has been offered to a couple of clubs in Serie A.

Newcastle want to clear their wage bill and with Krul one of the top earners at the club, and currently training with the Under23s, it makes sense for both the club and the player that he moves on soon.

Benitez has been linked with Udinese’s Greek goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis but no official bid has been placed on the table and while he has been mentioned behind the scenes as a possible backup signing, Newcastle would need to sell Darlow for that move to happen.

As it stands, Freddie Woodman will also remain as number 3 for the Magpies unless a new keeper is signed before deadline day.y
