Superteen Charlie’s Anglesey race move

-

TEENAGE whizz-kid Charlie Farrer put one hand on the ACU Team Green Junior Cup yesterday as he ups his battle to win three championships this year.

The 15-year-old from Easington headed back to the British Motorcycle Racing Club (BMCRC) paddock on Friday for the seventh round of the season, which was held over one day of racing at Oulton Park yesterday.

Also leading the overall Team Green championship, Farrer was beaten to pole only by Team Green Senior Cup rider Ben Hawes, who could only take points off him in the overall standings.

In the first battle yesterday afternoon, Farrer took the lead from the start and led for the first six laps before Hawes moved ahead. But Farrer had kept a little back and took position back on the last lap to take the win by just 0.071secs, winning maximum points in both Junior and overall classes.

And race two later in the afternoon was looking to be a carbon copy of the first, with Farrer leading all the way to the penultimate lap when Hawes passed him. This time, the youngster was unable to fight back, and the win went to Hawes by a mere 0.029secs.

While Hawes banked maximum points in Senior and overall, Farrer still took the top haul of Junior points to extend his championship lead to 158 points over his nearest rival.

Yesterday’s results came just a week since he took three wins from four races at Rockingham as he resumed his Thundersport GB Superteens fight, also extending his lead there.

If he wins both championships, he will become the first youngster to ever win two series from two different clubs which are aimed at bringing on new talent.

And what’s even more impressive about the quiet teen is that the whole operation is very much ‘lad and dad’, as he operates from the back of a van with his dad Noel, and is currently beating riders with big teams and huge budgets behind them.

The Farrers now face a decision about their next round, as the next BMCRC event at Brands Hatch in August clashes with Thundersport GB at Anglesey.

With his closest Team Green Junior rival Scott Ogden thought to have now left the series, Farrer is considering missing Brands Hatch to go to Anglesey, in the hope of getting a bigger points lead behind him in Superteens.

“We haven’t quite decided but I think missing Brands is an option now, especially if Scott isn’t coming back,” Noel told Burning Rubber.

“We have a decent cushion here now so it would probably make sense to try and get some more Superteen points and then take it from there.”
