Athletic made to work for the win

-

ON a day when the main focus was on the Alan Hood Charity Cup, there was only one Wearside League fixture.

Redcar Athletic continued their impressive start to the season, although they were made to work for it by Silksworth CW.

Braces from Mike Woodhouse and Jordan Rivis helped Redcar to a 4-3 win.

The visitors goals came from Adam Storey and Rob Hall.

There was one Preliminary Round tie in the Alan Hood Charity Cup as Sunderland West End were 6-0 winners at Coxhoe Athletic.

Four goals from Anthony Ross helped them on their way, with the other goals coming from Bryan Norton and David Keithley.

In the first round of the competition, two ties went to penalty shoot-outs.

Gateshead Leam Rangers and Annfield Plain shared six goals between them at Hilltop Playing Field.

And it was Leam Rangers that go through thanks to their 3-2 win in the shoot-out.

Richmond Town and Windscale also went to penalties after a 2-2 draw in normal time.

An injury-time goal by Windscale’s Brad Dryden took the tie to penalties, but his side were beaten 4-2 in the shoot-out.

David Johnson and Billy Crookston got on the scoresheet for Wolviston as they travelled to Boldon CA.

However, they left empty handed after a 4-2 defeat on South Tyneside.

Hartlepool FC were grateful to Dean Cope after his first-half goal put them through to the next round.

They were 1-0 winners against Harton and Westoe after Cope got on the end of an inswinging corner and forced the ball home from close range.

There was a battle of two reserve sides as Hebburn Town Reserves hosted Darlington Reserves at Castle View.

And it was the hosts that went through.

The Hornets were two up at the break thanks to goals from James Talbot and Ewan Simpson. Lewis Walton pulled one back for the Quakers early in the second half but it wasn’t enough to prevent the hosts from going through to the next round.

South Shields Reserves still await their first win of the season after they were beaten 3-1 at Stokesley SC.
