Williams sits out reunion

-

SCUNTHORPE United striker Luke Williams will miss the chance to line up against his former club at the Riverside Stadium on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old, who was Boro’s youngest player for 100 years when he made his debut aged 16 years and 200 days in 2009, has picked up a hamstring injury.

Williams was working his way back to full fitness following a previous injury and had trained for eight or nine days.

However, when on the verge of returning to The Iron squad for the Carabao Cup second-round tie at the Riverside, Williams has picked up a fresh hamstring problem.

He will be gutted to miss Garry Monk out on a possible Boro return and even more so to have another spell on the sidelines.

Scunthorpe qualified for the Teesside test after beating Notts County at Glanford Park in the first round.

The Iron won on penalties following a 3-3 draw.

Boro and Scunthorpe last met in competition in the Championship in 2011, when goals from Kris Boyd and Tony McMahon gave them a 2-0 win at the Riverside.

It was the fourth consecutive victory by Boro against the Iron. The sides have never previously met in a cup tie.

Monk took his previous club Leeds United to the fifth round of the League Cup last season before succumbing 2-0 to Liverpool at Anfield.
