Late treble from Hayton does the trick

PREMIER Division leaders Seaton Delaval, courtesy of a late, second-half hat-trick from Matty Hayton, put Gateshead A to the sword yesterday winning 5-1 at home to maintain their lead at the top.

Behind leaders Newcastle University, Shankhouse and Birtley are all keeping pace as they all collected three points from their games while fifthplace­d Gateshead Rutherford dropped points in their home draw with Ponteland.

Matthew Konadou-Yiadom, opened the scoring early in the first half as the Uni won 3-0 away to North Shields Athletic, Keith Douglas and Zachary Thomas notching late while the reply came courtesy of an own goal.

Shankhouse saw goals in each half from Kevin Westphal and Jonathon Edwards ease them to a 2-0 win at home to defending champions Killingwor­th Town, while Birtley edged past visitors Percy Main 2-1.

Elsewhere in the Premier Division, Rutherford and Ponteland shared six goals in a classic on Tyneside.

Wallington won 3-1 away to Ashington Colliers and Newbiggin won 5-0 at Whitley Bay A while Northbank Carlisle saw off the challenge of FC United of Newcastle 3-0 away in the first round of the League Cup.

The First and Second Division sides were all on cup duty in the Combinatio­n and Amateur Cup’s respective­ly.

The former, involving First Division clubs, saw Hazlerigg take the scoring credits when they thrashed visitors Hebburn Reyrolle 10-1, with Richard Coulson bagging four and Jay Adams two to progress.

Eleven goals were shared out at Gosforth as hosts Bohemians crashed 6-5 in extra-time against Forest Hall and Cullercoat­s edged an eight-goal thriller 5-3 away to Monkseaton.

Gricey bagged a double in Newcastle Chemfica’s 4-1 home win over Felling Magpies while both Cramlingto­n Town and Wallsend Boys Club went through with 2-1 home wins over Wallsend Community and New Fordley respective­ly, Killingwor­th YPC winning 1-0 at Hexham.

In the Amateur Cup all three Blyth sides progressed, with Spartans Reserves winning 2-0 at home to Spittal. An early goal from Peter Roberts saw Blyth FC defeat visitors Seghill 1-0, and Blyth Town won 4-2 away to Willington Quay Saints.

A four-goal blast from Ross Nicholson saw Winlaton defeat visitors Whitburn 5-0.
