WAR heroes who lost their lives fighting for their country were remembered at a moving event at a field of remembrance.

Scores of people attended a dedication ceremony at the display of crosses at Saltwell Park in Gateshead yesterday.

The field includes thousands of wooden crosses and other commemorative markers, each featuring the name of fallen service men and women.

The tributes were planted at the site by volunteers over the past few days and a special service was held to mark its opening. The dedication was followed by a minute’s silence.

Marcus Hawthorn, area manager for The Royal British Legion in the North East, said: “We are delighted to work with Gateshead Council to host the Field of Remembrance again this year.

“The service was an opportunity for the public to pay their respects and also reflect on the sacrifices made by so many men and women who gave their lives for the freedom we enjoy today.

“In this poignant year which marks the centenary of the First World War, we hope more people across the North East will visit our Field and pay tribute to those we must never forget.”

This is the sixth year the park has been transformed into a large-scale tribute, the only event of its kind in the whole of northern England.

Mayor of Gateshead, Coun Pauline Dillon, said: “Our region’s strong relationship with the armed forces stretches back generations.

“It is a huge privilege for Gateshead to host the Field of Remembrance and honour the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

“This is always a hugely emotional occasion. Being a part of this tribute means so much to so many people, particularly those who have lost loved ones.”

The display will be open from dawn to dusk until November 17.
