Dan’s the man to leave Blackpool on the rocks

-

NON-LEAGUE Boreham Wood dumped 1953 FA Cup winners Blackpool out of the competition at the firstround stage with an 88th-minute winner from Dan Holman.

The League One Seasiders had gone ahead through Danny Philliskirk’s 62nd-minute strike but substitutes Blair Turgott and Holman turned the game on its head to send the National League outfit through.

Manager Luke Garrard said: “This is what dreams are made of. We have created history at the club.

“In the first half, we gave them too much respect, there were raised voices at half-time and we got a response.

“When we levelled, I’m thinking ‘let’s finish the game now’ but we looked strong and fit and had wave upon wave of attack.

“We showed great character coming from a goal behind. We’ll play anyone over one game, I don’t care who we get in the next round!”

The Seasiders blew a number of firsthalf chances which they soon lived to regret – Philliskirk opened the scoring but Turgott crashed home from eight yards before Holman completed the turnaround.

“The result was very hard to take because we were excellent throughout the game,” said Blackpool boss Gary Bowyer. “We controlled the game and could’ve been talking about that but we gave them energy with their equaliser – and for the winner we didn’t defend the set play.

“In terms of possession, we could have been talking about a first-half hattrick for Callum Cooke but we didn’t take the chances we created.”

Oxford City and Maidstone also claimed Football League scalps with respective victories over Colchester and Cheltenham, while seventh-tier club Slough will also be in the second round. Matt Patterson, who caused a stir on social media over the summer when he was pictured signing his contract in a McDonald’s, scored Oxford’s goal in a 1-0 victory while Delano SamYorke bagged a brace before being sent off in Maidstone’s thrilling 4-2 victory at Cheltenham.

Slough were convincing 6-0 winners at National League North side Gainsborough, with Matt Lench scoring a hat-trick for the visitors.

Shaw Lane, another in the seventh tier, were unable to join them in the next round, having lost 3-1 to Mansfield earlier in the day, but Southern League Premier Division club Hereford Mansfield Town fans celebrate their side’s second goal against Shaw Lane made it through by beating AFC Telford United 1-0.

Wigan and Blackburn, who were both Premier League clubs earlier this decade, had to come from behind to see off Crawley and Barnet and fellow League One club Peterborough could only draw 1-1 with Tranmere.

League One leaders Shrewsbury dispatched Aldershot 5-0 – the same scoreline Stevenage beat Nantwich by – and Rochdale were 4-0 winners against Bromley.

Doncaster scored half-a-dozen times in defeating Ebbsfleet 6-2, although they were two goals behind, and other League One clubs Bradford, AFC Wimbledon, Plymouth and Gillingham all went through.

Yet Rotherham, Southend, Portsmouth and Oldham were all ousted by League Two clubs Crewe, Yeovil, Luton and Carlisle, while Northampton and Scunthorpe will need a replay.

AFC Fylde, who play in the fifth tier, advanced courtesy of a victory over Kidderminster while League Two club Forest Green negotiated their way past Macclesfield.
