Steely Consett show as Railwaymen hit buffers

- BY MARK CARRUTHERS

Action from yesterday’s Consett v Shildon clash at Belle Vue THREE goals, numerous chances created and an impressive win over a Northern League title contender.

This Consett win made chairman Frank Bell a happy man.

Then again, when isn’t Frank Bell a happy man?

He saw his the Steelmen put in a dominant display as they put three past Shildon without reply.

The two sides took their time to get into their stride and it was the hosts who had the first chance.

They created three chances inside six minutes with David Dowson, Michael Sweet and Danny Craggs having shots on goal, although only the latter came close to breaking the deadlock.

There was more than an element of fortune when they hosts finally grabbed the opener.

A long punt from Steelmen keeper Ross Coombe found its way to Dan Hawkins and his low cross from the right was diverted into his own net by Marc Ellison.

Fortunate, but hard against it being deserved.

Consett grew in confidence after their positive start, although they were grateful to see Adam Burnicle squander a golden opportunity to grab an equaliser for Shildon.

The Railwaymen broke with pace and Hartlepool United loanee Jack Blackford squared the ball to the striker, but he could only send the ball over the bar from inside the sixyard box.

That miss was punished on 42 minutes as Consett doubled their lead with a goal from Michael Sweet. to argue
