GRIMSBY TOWN 0 CARLISLE UNITED 1 Hill on a high for Blues but Bonham saves day

-

CARLISLE’S unbeaten run stretched to six games as they put on another near-perfect away display to take the points home from Blundell Park.

Veteran defender Clint Hill scored the all-important goal, but a mention in despatches has to go to Jack Bonham for a keeping performance which gave his side the springboard they needed to win the game.

Early Carlisle pressure brought a foul on Lambe as Mills chopped him to the floor on the edge of the area. McKeown had to get down sharply to palm the free-kick from Jones away as it threatened to creep in at his near post.

United came again with a lovely touch from Lambe which sent Grainger on the overlap. His cross looked to be perfect for Bennett, but it was just an inch too far away as the big striker slid in to try to finish it off.

It was a lively game and Bonham had to go full length to save from Vernon as he fired a cut back from Jaiyesimi at the target. The Mariners were quickly on to the rebound but the flag went up for offside as Jaiyesimi struck the bar. a long ball over the top found Lambe on the sprint. His first touch took him clear but he was disappointed to see his second touch tickle the outside of the side netting.

Grimsby had two halfchances as they came out all guns firing after the break but Hooper and Jaiyesimi were guilty of wayward finishing as they punted poor efforts high.

It was a decent opening to the half from the hosts, but they were almost undone when Jones and Brown combined to get into a dangerous area.
